Bitterns at Great Amwell

Imagine seeing a Bittern 20 seconds after entering a bird hide for the first time in your life. This was a reality for one of my young companions today who had been set a theme of birdwatching for part of their homework.
Our visit was impromptu and relatively short, but during our time in White Hide we saw two bitterns on different sides of the lake and two Snipe huddled in rough grass, as well as a Heron, Shovelers, and displaying Cormorants. A quick 5 minutes in the James Hide had us ‘up close and personal’ with a pair of Reed Buntings too.
Not bad for your first trip bird-watching!
